About Us

Pukekohe High School Childcare Centre began its journey in 1993, when a group of determined and dedicated
teachers from Pukekohe High School recognised the need for quality childcare within Pukekohe and the
surrounding areas.

This group formed a committee and spent three and a half years planning, fundraising and applying for grants
to establish our original purpose-built centre, located on the Pukekohe High School grounds at 14A Harris
Street, Pukekohe.

As a community-based, non-profit-making centre, we were established as an Incorporated Society, meaning
that families using the Centre became members of the Society. The Centre was initially licensed for 22 children
and was later increased to 23 places to help meet the growing demand for quality childcare.

Over the following years, successive committees continued to plan, fundraise and seek financial support for a
larger facility. Their hard work eventually resulted in a grant from the Ministry of Education, allowing us to
establish our current premises at 18 John Street, Pukekohe, which opened in October 2007.

To make space for the new Centre, Pukekohe High School relocated the old Principal’s House to the site. We
continue to occupy the property under a POD (Property Occupancy Document) agreement, which provides us
with a licence to occupy the land.

The larger premises were initially licensed for 30 children. As demand for childcare continued to grow,
particularly for places for children under two, our licence has progressively increased and we are now licensed
for 48 children.

In June 2008, the Centre gained charitable status and became a Charitable Trust. We remain a community-
based, not-for-profit organisation committed to providing quality early childhood education and care for local

families.

Our Governance and Organisation

The Centre is governed by an Executive Committee and supported by a Parent Committee, Centre Manager,
Centre Supervisor and teaching team.

The Executive Committee is responsible for the overall governance of the Centre and includes the Chairperson,
Secretary, Treasurer, Human Resources Representative, Centre Manager and Centre Supervisor. The
Chairperson and Secretary are parent representatives, ensuring that the voice of our families remains an
important part of our governance.

Our Parent Committee is made up of parents and whānau who use the Centre and who want to contribute
ideas, support fundraising and help ensure that our tamariki have access to the best possible facilities and
experiences. We encourage as many families as possible to become involved, as an active committee is an
important part of the continued success of our Centre.

The Committee is elected annually and consists of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer and up
to eight additional committee members.

All teaching staff report directly to the Centre Supervisor. The Centre Manager has overall responsibility for the
day-to-day management and operation of the Centre and reports directly to the Executive Committee.
